STARSkate Assessments
Assessments measure progress and allow skaters to see the results of their hard work. Each skater will progress at their own pace, so moving through the assessment levels is a very individual matter. When your coach feels that your skater is ready to be assessed, you will be notified of next steps.
STAR 1-5 and STAR 6-Gold Skills assessments are conducted by a qualified Skate Canada coach or evaluator on your skater's regular session. For STAR 6 & Up skaters to be assessed in Freeskate (Program & Elements), Dance, and Artistic programs, there are special days set aside for an external evaluator to come in and judge these assessments. Goulbourn Skating Club typically offers two assessment sessions during the winter season (December and March), and one or two assessment sessions for the spring season (April and/or June). There may also be opportunities to attend assessments at other local area clubs. Since these must be evaluated on clear ice, Assessment Days may also include STAR 5 Dance (5A Willow Waltz only), STAR 5 Artistic & STAR 5 Freeskate Program. These may be either evaluated by a coach or an evaluator.
When your coach feels the skater is ready to be assessed, you will be asked to register and pay for the assessment. (Please do not purchase assessments before being asked to do so by your coach.)
The Assessment Coordinator organizes the STAR 6 & Up assessment days, makes arrangements for the evaluators, and collects the test list from the coaches, and finalizes the schedule. Skaters are asked to arrive at the assessment day 45 minutes prior to their scheduled assessment time as sometimes the assessments move along fairly quickly and the timing can change. Each skater will get time to warm up their assessment. While being assessed, the skater will be asked to perform specific skills in front of an evaluator in order to assess if they are ready to advance to the next level. Each element of the assessment will be rated as bronze, silver, or gold. The skater needs to obtain mostly silver or better ratings in order to be successful on the assessment.

After the Assessment
Skaters may take their skates off and then wait for their results. Please keep in mind that it may take some time before the results are released, depending on when the evaluator has time to sign the assessment evaluation result sheets. A volunteer or coach will bring the results as soon as they are ready. Once the paperwork has been submitted by the Club to Skate Canada with the assessment fees, the Skater’s profile at Skate Canada will be updated with the results of each assessment taken. It is important to regularly check your skater profile by logging on to Skate Canada to check to see that the results have been updated.
It is important to keep the assessment sheet when you receive it back from the evaluator for your records.
