Goulbourn Skating Club Session Descriptions
Canskate: The Canskate program is recommended for youth skaters four years old and up who are looking to learn how to skate. The Club maintains a ratio of 1 coach to a maximum of 10 skaters for each group session. Skaters earn ribbons and badges in this program. When Canskaters have passed Stage 3, they can consider moving up into our Advanced Canskate session.
Advanced Canskate: The Advanced Canskate program is suitable for skaters who are interested in learning figure skating or simply interested in continuing to develop their skating skills and abilities and continuing to work on the higher level Canskate badges. Skaters must have passed Stage 3 in the Canskate program, or be recommended by one of our professional coaches.
There are 3 different sessions available for Advanced Canskate skaters:
- Freeskate sessions: Skaters receive a 50 minute group lesson with a professional coach. Figure skates are mandatory for this session style, as the session is typically shared with our Junior Starskaters.
- Circuits session: Designed to expose skaters to the required fundamentals necessary for developing strong skating skills, these sessions will be broken up into functioning stations where our professional coaches will be providing group instruction in a variety of skating elements such as but not limited to edges, spins, jumps and stroking. Skaters may wear figure or hockey skates on this session
Starskate: Once Advanced Canskate skaters have completed Stage 5, they can move up into our Starskate figure skating program. Here, sessions are divided by skating level (Junior and Senior) and skating discipline (Freeskate, Dance, and Skills).

Starskate sessions are described as follows:
Open: Skaters are free to do all types of skating on open sessions (skills, dance and freeskate).
Freeskate: Skaters should be focused on freeskate practice only.
Skills & Dance: These sessions are for skills and dance practice only. No freeskate elements (jumps, spins, freeskating moves) are allowed.
Freeskate, Skills & Dance: These are bundled sessions where generally 20 minutes are focused on skills and dance and 50 minutes are allocated to freeskate.
CanPower: The CanPower program is geared to hockey and ringette skaters that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations. CanPower provides an alternative to figure skating and is an excellent complement for those athletes playing on hockey or ringette teams. Its unique skill award program provides incentives and motivation for skaters to continue to achieve. This program is best suited to skaters aged approximately six or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards. For safety reasons participants should wear full hockey/ringette equipment that is CSA approved.
