Congratulations to Jack Fan!
Having just returned from Prince George BC, from the Canada Winter Games, Goulbourn Skating Club’s Jack Fan has had an awesome wrap-up to an already incredible skating season! In mid January Jack was one of several skaters from the Goulbourn Skating Club to compete in the Special Olympics Eastern Ontario Regional Skating Competition held in Stirling , where he took home 3 gold and 1 silver from the 4 events he competed in. Two weeks later he travelled to the Provincial Championships held in North Bay with fellow teammate Katie Xu, also from the Goulbourn Skating Club. Both had qualified for this competition because of their placements at last year’s Regional competition. At this competition he added another 3 gold medals in the 3 events in which he competed. The following week he was off to Toronto along with his coach Cathy Skinner (who had been selected to be the Special Olympics coach for Team Ontario - for the upcoming Canada Winter Games), for a staging camp for the Canada Winter Games. Here he was able to meet all the other figure skating athletes and coaches from across Ontario that would also be travelling to Prince George BC to compete as a part of Team Ontario. Two weeks later he was again off to Toronto where he and Cathy were to meet up with the rest of Team Ontario to board their charter flight to Prince George. Unfortunately due to bad weather etc, their trip to Prince George ended up being an almost 24 hour travel day! On their 2nd day there Jack sprained his ankle and was unable to skate on his first practice day. He was taken to the hospital for x-rays, which thankfully did not show a break, and he was tended to each day by the medical staff with physio, icing and taping of his ankle. In the first portion of his competition he was still in a great deal of discomfort but managed to place 2nd in this elements portion. Two days later he won the freeskate portion of the competition and pulled to first overall, capping off his season with another gold medal from the Canada Winter Games! His win helped Team Ontario win the Canada Winter Games flag, which is the goal of each province to try to win to take back home for the following 4 years. Coming home was another LONG day, arriving back in Ottawa 30 hours after we had awoken the previous day. After a short snooze in the afternoon Jack was back at the rink again Monday night ready to skate again! Way to go Jack and congratulations from all of us at the Goulbourn Skating Club. You have represented us so well this season and made us proud.
